Cancer survivor Kevin Cameron formed the Motley Crew bike team to ride in the BC Cancer Foundation’s Ride to Conquer Cancer. After a successful ride in 2012, he brought a bigger team together for 2013 and called upon Red Rocket Creative Strategies to design a unique team jersey. Considering the importance of the event, and understanding Kevin’s strong connection with the cause, Red Rocket Creative donated the design and production time as part of our yearly Giving Back campaign.
After a discovery session with Kevin, we decided to pursue two key themes: 1) Kevin’s passion for music and the Motley Crue heavy metal band and, 2) a personal representation of Kevin’s fight against cancer.
As with any bicycle jersey, visibility was key. So we chose a strong, bright red as the base color. Next we developed a custom font for the Motley Crew name and made this the dominant feature of the jersey front. The two words were separated by the “F Cancer” heartbeat icon, representing artist Susan Fiedler’s successful “F--- Cancer, Embrace Life” bracelets that she uses to raise money for cancer research and awareness.
The back of the jersey features a striking illustration (drawn in-house) of a woman on a bicycle with a guitar. Her left arm bears the same tattoos as those on Kevin’s left arm. The guitar, representing the power of music, also bears the Motley Crew name. Finally, on the neck of the jersey we placed a white guitar pick with a red Canadian maple leaf—just a bit of Canadian pride for the U.S. portion of the ride.
