Teck Cominco’s Sustained Reporting

Sustainable practices are the foundation for a company’s future success. Teck Cominco, Canada’s premier mining company, is passionate about its sustainable strategies and report on them in an open and transparent manner adhering to Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) stringent reporting guidelines. Being tasked with the responsibility to design the document once again Red Rocket’s challenge was to clearly communicate the significant technical information mandated by GRI, while keeping the document visually compelling and engaging to read.

Our solution is titled This is Our Future and is a bookend to TCLs’ acclaimed 2006 annual report – This is More than a Rock. Throughout the Sustainability Report colorful spreads with full-page photographs highlight individual employees and their sustainable initiatives. This anecdotal information is partnered with corporate messages stating the company’s position on a particular sustainable matter. The 92-page report is punctuated with “Spotlight” stories designed to keep the reader easily connected to the document amid a sea of technical detail.

Overall, the report portrays a sense of personal responsibility towards the footprint of the company’s activities. The published result was so successful; it has been selected as one of the 20 finalists for the CERES-ACCA North American reporting awards —the most acclaimed award for sustainability reporting content. Other prestigious companies short listed for the award include; 3M, Alcan, Baxter International, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Dell, Duke Energy, Ford Motor Company, Gap Inc., Hewlett-Packard, Nike, PotashCorp, Starbucks, Suncor Energy, The World Bank, Timberland, Weyerhaeuser, and Xerox. We think it is in very good company!

The final document was superbly printed on uncoated, acid-free paper, using the latest in UV printing technology. The report is also made available online as well as on CD.
