Many people just don’t understand mining. Rocks, large equipment and a significant environmental footprint are images people associate with mining activities. At the 2007 BC Mining Week the industry wanted to help people become aware that mining is “more than a rock” and asked Red Rocket to create a display that would tell the story of product utility and reclamation. The result is a three-dimensional, two-sided display that uses Styrofoam rocks on one side and real trees on the other. The rock side communicates the message of product utility: the metal used in creating Olympic medals, medical equipment is dependent on metal and the home just wouldn’t be the same without metal. The “green” side shows a reclaimed site after the mine is gone, returned to nature.
